Graham hid behind the draperies in the small study Casey had made for him just off the entry hall. He stared out into the night at the dark sedan idling again on the opposite side of the street.

Clearly, they were being watched.

Damn, if he only had a pair of night-vision glasses, but they weren't standard issue at Hearth-line. He could try to get a license plate number anyway, but that meant he'd risk being seen himself.

If only he had his former team members all accounted for…

Graham peered harder at the car across the street.

The driver was obscured by the night. Dark sedan. Dark clothes. Dark features. He'd been careful not to stop under a streetlight.

When the car finally pulled away, Graham breathed a sigh of relief and dropped the edge of the drapery. He stacked the pile of posters he'd made for Willy, ready for morning. But where in hell was Willy now?

Had Casey's assailant—Rafe, or someone else—harmed her dog? Willy's death would be a meaningful sign that she was vulnerable.

Maybe Willy had recognized the man Anton mentioned by his scent. And Willy had been killed, in effect, to shut him up. He had to admit, hurting Casey's dog didn't sound like Rafe, but that didn't let him off the hook, either. He could still be part of this.

Would the man have killed Casey this time, perhaps with Rafe's help, if Graham hadn't shown up in time to prevent her murder?

The image of Marilee Baxter lying dead flashed through Graham's mind again. The blood, the eerie silence, the lone cuff link in her hand.

Since then, Graham had talked to several of his past team members, in addition to David Wells, all retired now and living in suburban Maryland or Virginia. But others were still active and out of the country on assignment, including Tom Dallas, his own partner before Jackie. One of the other men had died in the line of duty in Iraq.

Graham needed to question Holt Kincade next.

His former "squash partner."

The lie to Casey didn't sit well, but then the lies never did.

For those few moments in the kitchen, with their mouths sealed together, their breathing ragged with the need flowing through him like oil through a pipeline, Graham had forgotten about all the danger and uncertainty.

He hoped Casey had forgotten, too.

The heat was still there, and even Casey couldn't deny it, but that didn't mean she intended to take him back. Or that he could allow that to happen. Graham had no illusions about their broken relationship. He wished he could come clean with her at last about his undercover work, but he couldn't compromise his chance to find the security leak at Hearthline—and Casey's attacker—before it was too late.

Never mind his fantasy that she might forgive him. He couldn't admit to his own renewed feelings for her. And expose her to further risk. Maybe after the killer, the traitor, was behind bars…

Yet Graham was puzzled.

In those multiple attacks on Casey, why didn't her assailant kill her?

He'd had ample opportunity.
